Most caravan trips include a walk: a lookout, a waterfall, a coastal track. A comfortable hiking daypack makes those days better, and a good travel backpack and packing cubes keep a small van organised.
This guide covers backpack sizes, fit and waterproofing, plus the packing gear that makes caravan cupboards go further.

For day walks, 20–35 litres carries water, a rain jacket, snacks and a first-aid kit. Bigger packs tempt you to carry more than you need.
For multi-day hikes or travel, 45 litres and up. Look for a separate bottom compartment (handy for shoes or wet gear) and a lid or front pocket for things you need often.
Fit and comfort
A padded hip belt moves weight off your shoulders and onto your hips. It matters on any pack carrying more than a few kilos. A chest strap stops shoulder straps sliding.
Try it loaded. A pack that feels fine empty can rub badly with 5 kg of water and gear inside.
Waterproofing
Water-resistant fabric shrugs off light showers; for kayaking, river crossings or tropical rain, look for a stated waterproof rating (such as IPX ratings) or roll-top dry-bag construction. Electronics still belong in a sealed pouch inside.
Insulated packs and packing cubes
An insulated backpack doubles as a soft esky for picnics and day trips, keeping drinks cold without lugging the big fridge.
Packing cubes are the quiet hero of caravan life: one cube per person or per job (socks, swimmers, tools) and the overhead cupboards stay organised for the whole trip. Compression cubes also squeeze bulky clothes down.
